Let me tell you the number one reason clients get frustrated after a Brazilian. It's not the wax. It's what they do in the 48 hours after.
I've done over 10,000 Brazilians. I know exactly what a well done wax looks like and how long the results should last. So when a client comes back three weeks later covered in bumps and ingrowns, my first question isn't "was the wax okay?" It's "what did you do after?"
Nine times out of ten, the answer is spin class the next morning.
Here's what your freshly waxed skin actually needs from you.
Why the First 48 Hours Matter
When I wax you, I'm pulling hair from the root. That leaves your follicles open. Wide open. Like little front doors with the welcome mat out.
For 48 hours after, anything that touches that area can walk right into your skin. Sweat. Bacteria. Chlorine. Your gym leggings. The last person's back sweat on the yoga mat. All of it.
This isn't me being dramatic. It's biology. And in Tucson, where September still feels like a hair dryer to the face, the risk goes up because you're sweating whether you meant to or not.
Give it two full days. That's it. Two days between the wax and the workout. Two days between the wax and the pool. Your future self will thank you.
Sweat and Gym Clothes: Your Worst Enemies
Sweat is salty. Salt in an open follicle stings and inflames. Now add bacteria from your body, your gym floor, and your leggings that you've worn to three classes this week.
You just built the perfect bump factory.
For 48 hours after your wax:
- No cardio, no heavy lifting, no hot yoga, no cycling
- No tight leggings, spanx, or shapewear
- No synthetic fabrics that trap moisture
- Cotton underwear only, loose fit
- Loose pants or a dress if you can swing it
I know. September in Tucson isn't exactly cotton dress weather. Do it anyway. Two days of frumpy is better than three weeks of ingrowns.
If you absolutely have to move your body, go for a slow walk in the early morning. Change out of anything sweaty the moment you're done. Shower gently, no scrubbing.
Pools, Hot Tubs, and Lakes: Just No
Public pools are bacterial soup. Even the well maintained ones. Chlorine kills a lot but not everything, and it dries out already sensitive skin. Hot tubs are worse. Warm water plus bacteria plus open follicles is a recipe for folliculitis, which is exactly as pretty as it sounds.
Lakes and rivers are the absolute worst. Skip Sabino Canyon swimming holes for two full days after your wax. That water carries whatever people, dogs, and wildlife left behind.
Same 48 hour rule. Every time.
Your own bathtub at home is fine after 24 hours as long as you keep the water warm, not hot. And skip the bath bombs, bubble baths, and scented salts. Your skin doesn't need a fragrance experiment right now.
How to Actually Prevent Ingrowns
Ingrowns aren't inevitable. They're a maintenance failure. Here's the protocol that works:
Days 1 to 2:
- Nothing on the area but a fragrance free, gentle moisturizer
- No deodorant, no perfume, no scrubs
- Skip retinoids and acids in that area
Day 3 forward:
- Start gentle exfoliation two to three times a week
- A soft washcloth or a chemical exfoliant works, skip the harsh scrubs
- Keep the skin hydrated daily
Between waxes:
- Exfoliate two to three times a week, every week
- Hydrate daily with a fragrance free lotion
- Wear breathable underwear when you can
- Never shave between appointments, ever
Shaving between waxes resets your hair growth cycle and undoes everything I did in my chair. If you're going to shave, don't bother coming back to me. I'm not exaggerating.
When to Reschedule Instead of Getting Waxed
Some days are not waxing days. Save yourself the money and the misery:
- You're on your period (technically fine but way more painful)
- You have a sunburn in the area
- You started a retinoid, Accutane, or a prescription acid in the last six months
- You have an active breakout, cut, or open wound
- You have a big event within 48 hours where you'll be sweating or swimming
If any of those apply, call and reschedule. I'd rather move your appointment than watch you have a bad experience.

If you're new to me, book a consultation. We'll talk through your skin, your hair, your schedule, and figure out the right start for you.
Either way, don't wing it. Book with someone who knows what they're doing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait to work out after a Brazilian wax?
Wait 48 full hours before any workout. Sweat in open follicles causes bumps, ingrowns, and folliculitis. Two days of rest is worth the results.
Can I have sex after a Brazilian wax?
Wait 48 hours. Friction and body fluids on freshly waxed skin cause irritation and bacterial issues. Plan your wax accordingly.
Why do I get ingrowns every time I wax?
Because you're probably not exfoliating between appointments. Start gentle exfoliation on day three and keep it up two to three times a week. That's the whole secret.
Can I go swimming after a Brazilian?
Not for 48 hours. Pools, hot tubs, lakes, and rivers all carry bacteria that can infect open follicles. Reschedule your wax around your pool plans, not the other way around.
Is it normal to have bumps right after a wax?
A little redness is normal for a few hours. Actual bumps that stick around for days mean something went wrong, usually in aftercare. If you followed the rules and still broke out, call me and we'll troubleshoot.
How often should I get a Brazilian to stay smooth?
Every four to six weeks is the sweet spot. Skipping past six weeks resets your hair cycle and makes the next wax more painful and less effective.
Can I use deodorant on the area after a wax?
No. Skip all fragrance, deodorant, and perfumed products for the first 48 hours. Your follicles are open and everything absorbs faster than usual.
